They can be used to test the water for a new colour scheme, so little if any overstock mistakes are made. Even before the item has gone into production, which saves time and financial investment.

Indoor digital signage hardware can be used to provide a global launch, so a band may launch a new product across the world stores on the same day, as soon as the store opens, no matter what time zone it is in. This way they have the upper hand against their competition, from launching a competing product.

LED video wall – from Hollywood to New York Churches

Applications for an LED video wall.

Ever wondered who uses an LED video wall and why? Well let us share some information with you on the LED video wall market. More information can be seen at http://www.digitalsignagetoday.com/topics/led-signs/

Do you know what an LED video wall is?

racecourse led video wall

You may have seen the signs at the gas station, giving the price of the fuel, these are LED signs, yet no as sophisticated as an LED video wall. Usually at a gas station they are one color normally red or green. They provide information and this is where the similarities end!

A video wall using LED panels are constructed in elements of the colors, pitched evenly over a panel that measures, just short of 3 feet square. The pitch between the clusters of LED’s is called pitch and this dictates the clarity of the image close up (within 6 feet) and how far away the image can be seen clearly. Normally, a low number means the advertising wall is better. The number is preceded with the letter P, for Pitch. These range from P3 to P20.

Who uses these video walls and why?

You can see these LED video walls almost on every corner, but have you really noticed them? The fact is they do blend into their surroundings if that is what the clients wants and then it is up to the content to grab the viewer’s attention.
Church LED video walls – these are deployed to provide the community with event updates within the house of worship, they also provide information on mile stones of people from the congregation, this may be a special birthday, or wedding anniversary. One real winner is to keep everyone informed of a fund raising event, so the congregation and the community can see how much the house of worship has raised for the good cause.

Entertainment video walls – organizations such as Madame Tussaud’s are deploying LED video walls on the Hollywood location, to give a sneak peak of what the exhibition holds inside. This in turn boosts the number of visitors and tourist through the door and increases profit.

The LED video wall does not have to be in static location, it can be mounted on the rear of a truck and used in highly congested areas at peak times and so the digital advertising gets as many viewers as possible. This is something banks are using to promote lower cost mortgages and savings accounts. They are even used on the side of buses, to provide an income stream for the bus company, by advertising local attractions in destinations such as Florida that have high tourist numbers.

LED video wall in trailer

This could be the restrictive part! With many solutions on the market, a typical price for an LED video wall that is 3 feet high by 6 feet wide is around $3500, but bearing in mind that the ads alone used to supplement the investment will pay for the hardware in 2 or 3 months. With an extra income stream every month following the ROI, that is 100% profit.

Now you know what to look for and consider when choosing an LED video wall solution.

Digital signage benefits for restaurants

Restaurant digital signage benefits.

Restaurant advertising is essential for success; this is why digital signage is paramount to any restaurant. Let us look at the solutions available.

Without advertising a business is dead?

Is this correct? Well think for a moment, for a new restaurant with no reputation how are they going to get people in their establishment? It is essential for the business owner to use any form of advertising, the most effective advertising is dynamic advertising. This is when clear images, videos and audio are used to provide an engaging visual experience. This in turns educates the consumers as to what food items are on the menu.

Different kinds of digital signage solutions for restaurants.

digital signage in restaurants

The typical digital advertising solution in a QSR is to have displays lined up above the food counter, so consumers can view the menu and see what specials are on offer that day. This solution is a digital menu board.

Tablet digital signage is yet a new solution, these are similar to electronic menu boards, but are located around the restaurant, so you can peruse the menu and then order it, usually in a waitress restaurant environment.

Benefits to restaurants.

Using digital advertising is proving to be a very important part of any restaurant’s advertising campaigns. Historically, the restaurant industry has used traditional printed menus, now the challenge here is that they can be very restrictive. You cannot promote specials unless you run a blackboard too, this is becoming very old fashioned and seems to be dying out.

Electronic signage allows the restaurant owners to promote local produce, whilst maximizing profit with the special meal deals. They also reduce costs as the content can be updated remotely or locally within seconds without additional costs, unlike printed menus.

Electronic menu boards engage with the consumer in the QSR and in turn increase turnover, as one restaurant tested this with 1 location using digital menu boards and another similar location using no electronic signage. An increase of 32% in sales was seen in the location with the digital menu boards!

Tablet digital signage.

tablet digital signage

Tablet digital signage is a relatively new concept; it starts when the customer enters the restaurant and is seated. They are handed a tablet that has the menu displayed on it along with brinks that complement the food, ensuring the dining experience is an enjoyable one. Once they make their choices, they can either kick back and chat or use the tablet to play 2 person games against the person they have come with.

Just before the meal is due to be served, their server approaches them and asks them to enter their email address, for future discount coupons, thus building a database of customers to market too. Then they instantly receive a free drink with their meal for providing their email address (once it has been verified, by the consumer clicking a verification link).

The meal is then served and when the diners have finished and go to pay, they are then given the opportunity to rate the restaurant. Another opportunity to collect emails or even use a Facebook page for the restaurant, to increase social media activity.

As you can see, there are several ways in which electronic signage can be used in restaurants. Any of these digital signage solution work.

MOOH – Mobile Out Of Home Advertising Solutions

Mobile Out Of Home Advertising.

We have all seen DOOH (Digital Out Of Home Advertising), now the scene is set for Mobile Out of Home Advertising (MOOH). There are several solutions so let us look at them and decide how we can use them.

With over 3.2 billion mobile devices being used every single day, this is a medium to consider for advertising!

MOOH – Mobile Out Of Home WiFi advertising.

This new concept is used in large footfall areas such as airports, ferry terminals, train stations and hotels. The principle is rather basic; mobile users view an ad in exchange for complimentary internet access. This allows brands to target the mobile users through this medium. These work on both Android and Apple operating systems.

Mobile out of home advertising.

This is literary! Displays are either worn, or placed on bicycles that display ads and promote products and services in a preset area. The restrictions are down to the battery life for the work hardware and if power can be connected to the cycle solution.

Usually the displays are not sunlight readable, so on a bright day the screens can be unreadable, resulting in a failed advertising campaign.

Other types of mobile out of home advertising is using an LED panel built onto a van or truck body.

Mobile out of home advertising – the fast growing sector.

mobile out of home

Mobile advertising using QR codes are increasing in use, people scan the QR code after seeing the promotion from the advertising company and are redirected to a web page with either a special offer or discount page. They can then redeem the discount at the advertisers premises.

Now with restaurants using this type of advertising, it is one of the fastest growing methods of MOOH (Mobile Out Of Home) advertising.

Checking if your MOOH has an ROI.

One way is for an outlet, in the example we will use a restaurant. Scans the discount page QR code at the counter top whilst the POS system processes the payment. This way the managers of the franchise can monitor how their advertising buck is working, which campaign is working and which is not. Allowing the outlet to maximize profit.

Reports can be created, on who scanned the QR code, who redeemed it and even an opportunity to re market the brand to people who scanned the QR code and did not redeem the discount. A retailer can also see who has shared the discount voucher on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

Out of home advertising is here to stay, as can be seen on Wikipedia with MOOH (Mobile Out Of Home) advertising increasing fast.

LED Signs Used By Fast Food Outlets and In the Pews

LED signs for outdoor advertising.

LED signs are not limited to large budget, this technology is rather affordable. So much so these are being used in fast food restaurants and house of worship digital signage to provide outdoor digital signage.

LED signs

Fast food LED signs.

New York’s Times Square saw Buffalo Wild Wings open a restaurant recently. Here they are using LED signs to improve brand awareness, as well as advertising special deals and up selling consumers. Buffalo Wild Wings are now set to rock Times Square with their digital signage LED sign.

House of worship LED Signs.

Religious organizations are also using outdoor LED signs, these are used to inform the community throughout the day, so parishioners can see if their fundraising efforts are hitting the target. Not just used to promote giving, these outdoor LED signs are used to promote baptisms, weddings and even used to highlight the life of a recently departed member of the congregation.

So what hardware is needed.

An LED sign is made of up of panels that are 3 feet square, each panel depending on the specification is categorized in P, the letter P stands for pixels. So a P6 has pixels at 6mm or ¼” centers, a P10 has pixels at 10mm or 3/8” canters and so on up to P30. However the issue is anything over P10 will result in a poor sign with a slightly blurred image, when viewed from a distance of 5 feet or more. This is one of the problems that people face, as they compromise on the quality of the image to price. Yet, today the price of LED signs has fallen due to P3 panels being launched.

The panels are configured in a frame to create the size of panel size the user requires. Then once the installation is set up in the frame, cables for power and data are then run from the outdoor LED sign to an office inside the building, this can be the fast food outlet or the Church.

Screen Processor.

Now, when you have seen these large screens before, you will notice that they can be split into separate zones, this is done through the screen processor, this in one part that many cut corners, yet this is the hardware than can take your content and create awesome content!

The processor is the brains behind the LED screen, it can create screen within screens or the advertiser can use the massive video wall to promote their product.

Budgetary cost for LED signs.

People see these solutions and presume they are out of their price range; yet these are one of the most affordable solutions. With a 6 feet by 3 feet outdoor LED video wall complete with a processor and all the relevant accessories would run any organization at $3,000. A P6 screen for the same size would cost around $5,000, but remember if you resell space on the processor you can pull back return on investment in less than 2 months, creating an additional income stream.

We hope these points have helped provide some insight into LED signs.

church digital signage

When deploying electronic noticeboards in Churches, we have to be sympathetic to the more traditional parishioner, who may take offense at these large screens being installed in the House Of God. It is best to have a brief meeting to explain how these electronic signs will help the Church and inform the community, which in turn will certainly increase the number of worshipers.

Indoor or outside church digital signage?

Many houses of worship have digital signage hardware both indoors and outside, this does come down to budget, however there are lots of benefits.

Outdoor LED memorials are idea to keep the community up to date with the current events happening in the church. These run 24 x 7, with some churches offering sponsors (local businesses) the ability to publicize they support the church. This is usually in the form of a monthly subscription of between $200 and $500 per year. If 20 sponsors support the church and pay for 12 months, the hardware has been paid for, with nearly $4,000 – 6,000 going into the Church funds. LED video walls run for around $3,000 for a 6’ wide x 3’ high screen, including all the hardware to add the content.

Indoor digital signage, these are designed for inside the church, they can be wall mounted or floor standing. Used for updating any fundraising event and promoting it through the community.

The electronic notice boards can be used to celebrate a birth or life of one of the congregation. It can display prays for the sick of the parish, so we keep them dear to our heart. They can also be used to provide future events within the churches calendar.

LCD or Projector?

Some religious buildings prefer to use either high definition flat screen LCD displays, while some prefer to use projectors. This is down to personal choice and the available space required, as the projector solution will take more space than a flat panel display solution.

Screen size for church digital signage.

The standard size of a screen used for church digital signage is 46”- this can either be in landscape or portrait. Yet the most popular unit is a floor standing electronic sign that takes up little room and is updated using a flash drive. Usually nothing larger than 55” is used in any religious establishment.

Content creation.

There are many church digital signage software providers, so check them out and do not be afraid of trying the free ones.

We hope you take some of these tips and use them for your church digital signage project.

Tips for picking the best house of worship projector

Picking A House Of Worship Projector?

With many Churches and other religious buildings looking to use house of worship projectors during their service, there are some tips to make sure you get the right solution for your house of worship.

house of worship projector

Screen size for your house of worship projector?

This is one of the main factors, how big do you need the projector screen to be? It is best not to guess, so use a tape measure and get the accurate dimensions. So that the house of worship projector can impress the people of the community.

Than next factor is to discover how the far you want the projected image, as a golden rule, double the projector screen is an excellent distance, from the projector to the screen. So if the screen is 10 feet wide, the projector should be around 20 feet away from the screen. This will certainly depend on any space limitations in your house of worship.

Aspect ratio.

This is the projected image shape, either rectangle or square. The most cost effective solution would be to go for a unit that has an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 16:10, this will future proof your investment.

Brightness of the projector.

Most houses of worship are painted white, so the best brightness is a unit with 5,000 lumen. This will provide a crystal clear projected image for congregations up to 150 seated individuals. If the congregation is larger, say 250, you may need to increase the lumen to 7,000, so that everyone can the image in ambient lighting.

What about projection?

Is the House of Worship left unattended at any time, so parishioners can come and pray? In that case a security cage may be the best option, but then again an anti-vandal all one 1 solution may be what you need. At the end of the day, it will come down to budget.

What projectors can do in Houses of Worship?

They can keep the congregation up to speed with the service, reading psalms, singing hymns and community notifications can all be shown on the large screen. Without the added expense of someone having to do any printing, then what happens when the printing machine breaks! Or an expensive toner leaks, one of the sides people will have ink on their hands.

We will see more religious buildings using projectors to interact with the congregation and the wider community. Thus increasing the numbers of the parishioners through the doors, down to the house of worship projector.

Digital projector sales set to soar

Digital Projectors and 4K!

With many digital projectors on the market and the introduction of 4K projectors, every manufacture including Sony and Christie are bringing out a high end solution. With over 195,000 digital projectors sold alone in India in 2013, the market it set to burst!

More and more businesses are waking up to the realization that they can use digital projectors outdoors to project their dynamic advertisements on their building, providing a a unique marketing concept.

Initially, Christie entered into the outdoor, commercial cinema area with their 4K projector; these are the beasts of projectors, with a price tag to match. The Christie Digital 129-004105-02 D4K35 3-chip DLP 4K Projector is priced at $114,750 and there are more expensive projectors from the same stable!

Is it too early to invest in 4K digital projectors?

digital projectors

When HD flat screen displays came out, they trended well, with people ordering them as soon as they had been released. The fact was, we had never seen an image as good as on HD, until now! 4k is more than twice the amount of pixels both horizontal and vertical pixels than a 1080P digital projector.

Well, the honest answer is yes! Let 4K develop and this will lower the prices for the other digital projectors, so manufacturers can sell the stock and then push the new line. This will in turn, allow most people who like to kick back with friends over a beer and watch outdoor TV, to install a good quality, high lumen projector in their backyard.

Taking the home cinema outdoors is the new thing to be doing. We saw flat panel displays installed in 2009 in backyards, now it is time for digital projectors

Potential problem.

One thing is for certain, if a projector is being deployed outside, some type of protection is required, to ensure the bulb lasts longer than it should, with 4K replacement bulbs costing as much as $1600. So you do not want to be replacing them every week.

We spoke to ProEnc (http://proencltd.com) who have been manufacturing outside projector enclosures and they have seen a large rise in orders, for their protective housing from countries such as Russia, Australia, Romania and America. Their outdoor, environmental projector enclosure allows anyone to put a projector out and leave it out all year, in all weathers. The unit has a special heating and cooling system that safeguards the bulb from prematurely failing, due to one of the following: the heat, cold or moisture.

They put this new rise in demand down to the market getting ready to launch the 4K solutions. Now is a time to grab yourself a bargain and get more affordable digital projectors.

Outdoor Entertaining In Your Own Backyard

WFO – Outdoor Entertaining

It has come that time of year again, to look at how we can spend more time outdoors, it might be building an outdoor wood fired oven, or just to create an outdoor entertainment area, let us look at what’s available.

wfo outdoor entertaining

Wood fired oven.

Ideal for impromptu outdoor entertaining family and friends, but most importantly it is a good way in which to share food and is extremely social. These are ideal for cooking anything from pizzas to steak! So let us look at the build.

Building a wood fired oven.

You must start off with a solid foundation, usually 6” deep and reinforced with steel mesh, ensuring it is level. So tamp it down with a wooden plank, then you need to decide upon the height of the opening of the outdoor oven, this dictates how how you need to build the supporting wall. Once the wall is build you have to put some steels in to support the oven floor, on top of the steels (these can be 4” x 2” hollow section put 1/2” thick marine plywood on top creating a pool effect, then fill this area with cement and put some reinforced steel in. Then start building your oven, an awesome resource is (http://www.fornobravo.com/forum/) Forno Bravo – we use this website for awesome tips and inspiration. There is nothing nicer than outdoor entertaining and sharing food with people you care for.

Firing the wood fired oven.

Over years of practice, we found that if you create a U shape with 3 logs on the base with the gap opening to the front of the oven, then put some newspaper in the opening. On top of the paper place some kindling (I find thin slivers of wood best, then on top of this place some thin twigs, then gradually get thicker up to 2” in diameter. Then all you need to so is light the newspaper and the rest just lights. Once the fire starts put thicker logs up to 10” in front of the fire to dry out, then when the fire is almost out, add them and the fire starts again.

Cooking temperatures for different food.

Pizza needs a fierce high temperature, but the diversity of the wood fired oven allows you to cook almost anything in there at low temperatures or as the temperature is falling. Ideal for cooking brisket or pulled pork. We have had our wood fired oven up to 999F (that is as high as our infra red thermometer goes to, cooked pizza and then let it lover to around 140F and put the oven door too, prepare the pulled pork, lamb tagine or brisket and put it in the oven so cook long and slow in the residual temperature of the wood fired oven.

What next for outdoor entertaining?

So the wood fired oven was complete, but we needed an area for family and friends to enjoy the food outdoors and the outdoor entertaining area, so we started building a seating area for them, but one thing was missing – how do we entertain them whilst they are waiting for their food? Two options came to mind, show a video but we would need a projector or to use a TV, the problem was in our area it rains a lot unfortunately, so any hardware like this would be ruined in the first rain shower.

End result.

The result was that our outdoor, backyard entertainment area is used every weekend, and when anyone wants a party, they know to call us and we will host it. One thing is for sure, installing the wood fired oven was the best thing we did and our family and friends love our outdoor entertaining experience.
